Approximately 3 ½ years ago, after seeing some pictures of myself taken in Hawaii, I decided it was time to really get serious about losing weight, not only for the look of it, but for my health.
My doctor had told me I was “creeping upward” toward type 2 diabetes, and he now considered me pre-diabetic, He recommended I not only watch the volume of food I was eating, but to increase my exercising, telling me that “the older we get, the harder we have to work:. Since I also have a low thyroid that I take medication for (which can affect your metabolism), he encouraged me to up my exercising to twice a day…once in the AM(which I was doing at Curves) and then to add some other type of exercise in the PM to keep my metabolism revved up throughout the day. He gave me 4 months to begin my weight loss journey and if I hadn’t shown any progress after that time, he would have to put me on diabetes medication.
At the time I was just going to Curves 3 times/week and walking occasionally. So I decided to increase my AM Curves workout to 5-6 times/week and increase my walking to a daily afternoon routine, walking at least 2-3 miles each day (either outside or on my treadmill) giving myself Sundays off. Along with the exercise I dusted off my food scale and carefully started watching food volumes. It all definitely worked!
When I returned to the doctor in 4 months, I had lost approximately 10-12 lbs and my A1C was now at a healthy level. I eventually achieved my goal of losing 25 lbs, and my weight has stayed at that level now for almost a year. I’m definitely very happy, my doctor is very happy and needless to say, I don’t have to take diabetes medicine. The other benefit of my weight loss..I went from a size 12 to a size 6 which meant I had a great reason to buy all new clothes. What fun!!
I’ve gained and lost weight many times over the years but now I’m committed to maintaining a healthy weight for myself. Doing that not only makes me feel much better, it is also much healthier for me.

My name is Ruth Eggers. I’ve been a member of Curves for about 4 years. I’m convinced that Curves has helped me recovery more quickly from several health issues. Early in 2008, I had major surgery and was able to stand, walk, and generally recover mobility much faster than if I had not had the Curves workouts to strengthen my muscles beforehand. I am able to get up and down on the floor better than before I started Curves and my ‘blue’ periods seem to be much shorter. The Curves staff is always engaging and bringing laughter to the day.

My name is Phylis Peluso . In August 2006, I made a very important decision to better my life. I joined Curves!
I worked out for the most part at least three times a week, which was great exercise, but I really wasn’t losing weight. That is, until I joined the 6-week nutrition class the following spring which was offered there and taught by Rhea. I learned about the right way to eat with the proper nutrition and portions. This class was the beginning of my loss of weight, body fat and inches. I’m not going to say that I haven’t “slipped” sometimes along the path to success, but was “righted” to continue on my way, by the ongoing help of my little angel, Rhea, with her encouragement and support.
Not only has Curves been a great support in these losses, but I have enjoyed many new friendships inside their doors. I have talked to other Curves members many times about what this class has done for me.
